Hardware and software news
Good morning to all of you. Let’s start the day with a round of hardware and software news, shall we?
News :
On DailyTech :
Windows XP Service Pack 3 now available for download.
Now, that’s great news for people like you and me, who still uses Windows XP. Bad news for Microsoft though, as that will slow down migration to Windows Vista and reduce their revenues. (Do you see me crying for them? Hon, poor Microsoft..)
AMD Launches Business Class Computer Initiative
I personaly see no extra benefits from those new cpus from AMD. They are more expensive and offer the exact same performance. “New Business Class computers will have configurations with 24-month stability and longevity” 24 months?! Is that a joke? I mean, I have a friend who had her computer for nearly 8 years(That’s 96 months!, take that AMD) and only had to replace two part during the whole time, that is her power supply, a cpu fan last year and it is still working fine! The best part in this, is that computer wasn’t branded, it was custom-made by a Montreal based computer hardware company. Back on to the news though, it is a good move from AMD, in order to face its competition, Intel that is.
From Digitimes :
AMD new cpus lineup revealed
Interesting, but I haven’t seen the prices on them yet. That, and only that, will tell me if those new cpus have interest, facing the competition by Intel in the cpu market.
Western Digital launches two My Passport Elite portable hard drives
New 250GB and 320GB models. Those are great news, I can’t wait to see them available here, I could use one of those for my laptop. I mean, it’s small, at 2.5″ , and it weights only 142 grams.
Asustek plans to make Eee an independent brand, 10- and 11-inch Eee PCs on the way
Oh, an independent brand with Eee. I can’t wait to see that happen, I wonder what kind of desktop systems that will make. I have no interest in Eee’s at this moment, they are not powerful enough for my requirements, and the keyboard is way too small for me. I’ll take a look at them when they will feature the new Intel Atom cpu however. That will be interesting. In a near future, coming to your country..
BD-ROM drive prices may fall to about 130$USD at end of 2008
Cool, now can you please drop the cost of media so that we actually have a use for that drive?
From Behardware :
Sun buys Montalvo and its X86 cpus.
Hmm, interesting, I wonder what will Sun do with that. They are currently using mostly Intel cpus, with their own cpus for the rest of their systems.
From NerdBusiness :
How to try Ubuntu without leaving Windows
Now, THAT is a very very interesting article. Probably what I needed to try Linux. I’ll come back to all of you when I decide to try it out.
From Tom’s Hardware :
Intel to build Super Computers with Cray.
Neat! That sounds like a good alliance for both companies. I’m looking forward to hear about what they come out with.
Google enhances Image Search
Good news for people who likes to search images through Google Images. I do!
Dell, HP, Lenovo to offer Windows XP beyond June 30th
Great news, keep offering the customer more choices. Not everyone wants to switch to Vista yet.
The new 3DMarkVantage uses Ray-Tracing
Apple updates IMac and get Intel’s Montevina Cpus early.
Once again, Apple has the privilege to offer a faster processor than what PC vendors are selling today. Well done Apple, very well done. I’m jealous of you for getting those cpus before the PC market hehe.
3D monitors coming down in price, but still expensive
Gaming with a 3D monitor?! Sweet…I cannot wait to try out one of these!
AMD Puma can’t compete with Intel’s Core 2 Duo lineup
Very bad news for AMD. They need to get some form of edge over Intel, or they will keep losing money.
Leak: ATI upcoming Radeon 4800 gets 480 Stream processors.
Finally, something from ATI to beat down the Nvidia 8800GTX, which came out almost 2 years ago and is still considered the top of the line single-core video card.
AMD gains some market share in Quarter 4 of 2007.
Good news for AMD, they need to sell more cpus and make more profits in order to survive. Intel increases their market share too however.
That’s it for hardware and software news for today folks. I hope you’ve enjoyed it!
