After motherboards yesterday, here’s the failure rates for power supplies, based on a large French e-seller. Theses numbers are regarding power supplies sold between April to September 2007, so that’s 6 to 12 months of usage. The statistics per brand are based on a sample of at least 500 sales.

- Enermax : 1.0%
- Corsair : 1.1%
- Akasa : 1.6%
- Cooler Master : 1.6%
- Fortron : 1.6%
- Thermaltake : 2.5%
- Seasonic : 2.6%
- Antec : 2.8%
- Max In Power : 3.4%
- Hiper : 4.8%

Enermax, who was second to last a bit more than a year ago, is now the current leader. Antec, who had a return rate of 9.5%, due to a default on their SmartPower brand is now in a much better shape and Hiper finished last.

You’ve got to say that one of their most sold models of the brand, the HPU-4S350, has a failure rate of slightly more than 9%! The two other worse models, both from Hiper as well, are the HPU-4M530 at 8.5%, followed by the HPU-4M670, at 6.9%.

Of course, I recommend avoiding those particular models, as a failing power supply could possibly damage your whole computer!

  1. I am surprised as well why Silverstone PSU is not on the list

  2. Well, the statistics are based on a sample of at least 500 sales per brand. I would suppose that either :
A- the French e-seller who the information comes from doesn’t carry the Silverstone brand or
    B- He didn’t sell 500 Silverstone units.
