The Best Entry-level Tablets

Amazon Fire Tablets

1. Amazon Fire

The Amazon Fire is the least expensive tablet that I recommend. It’s not the most powerful, nor does it offer the best screen or great cameras. It is meant to be used for casual use, for browsing the web, emails, ebooks, Facebook and the like.

Pros:
– A MicroSD slot allows you to add a MicroSD card for up to 200GB additionnal storage to store music, pictures, videos and other content
– Inexpensive tablet and offers a good quality for its price
– Quite light at only 313g (.69 pound)
– Good for casual use such as browsing the internet, emails and facebook
– Amazon prime members get free games, movies and apps

Cons:
– Low resolution screen so the display could be better and is not going to look as smooth as an HD display
– Low camera quality: The back camera is only 2MP, while the front camera is even worse: 640 x 480. Acceptable at best for video calls, but you’re not going to be able to take mind-blowing pictures.
– Because of its low amount of memory, performance can be slow while running multiple applications at the same time.
– This is not a good tablet for game applications, games are demanding on this tablet and are most likely to be unable to run smoothly and properly.
– Restrictive OS: The operating system of amazon tablets is highly focused on Amazon services, this means that unless you are an Amazon prime member you can’t fully benefit from all that it has to offer.

Pros:
– The HD Display for a sharp and crisp image quality so that way the display looks smoother.
– It packs a better CPU performance than the other Fire tablets so it’s able to run all the apps you throw at it without being slowed down as much.
– Highly portable: Compact 6″ screen size and lightweight (290g / 0.63 pound)
– Multiple color choices

Cons:
– HD display: It’s better than the Amazon Fire, but you can get tablets with even higher resolution displays that look sharper.
– Low camera quality: The back camera is only 2MP, while the front camera is even worse: 640 x 480. Acceptable at best for video calls, but you’re not going to be able to take mind-blowing pictures.
– Restrictive OS : The operating system of amazon tablets is highly focused on Amazon services, this means that unless you are an Amazon prime member you can’t fully benefit from all that it has to offer.
– No storage card slot so its restricted to the initial internal storage, this means once the device is full you can’t add any extra space.

10. Lenovo IdeaPad Miix 300 10.1″

Are you looking for a great entry-level Windows 10 tablet that comes with a detachable keyboard and good amount of storage from the go?

This model might interest you. The Intel Atom Z3735F CPU that comes in this device isn’t a powerhouse but it’s perfect to do all the tasks a tablet is made for such as web browsing, emails and some applications that aren’t demanding resources wise.

There’s a newer IdeaPad Miix 310 model, but I’d stay away from it, it appears to be unreliable if you look at customer reviews.

Pros:
– 64GB of onboard storage is a huge amount for the price of this device. You probably won’t need extra storage anytime soon.
– MicroSD card reader to add a MicroSD card for extra storage to add more images, videos and music.
– Comes with a detachable keyboard so that way you can switch in between tablet and laptop mode depending on what you need.
– IPS display panel for accurate colors, great contrasts and a large view angle.
– Micro-HDMI that lets you connect your display on a external screen or HDTV.
– This tablet runs on Windows 10, meaning you can install any Windows program.
– Bluetooth 4.0

Cons:

– Screen resolution of 1280 x 800
– Even though there is a keyboard included, its layout could be better : the arrow keys are stuck with the page down and page up keys which can be bothersome.
– You’ll likely need an adapter or a new cable to connect the micro-HDMI port to an HDMI monitor/HDTV.
– Battery could be better : this battery has an average of 7 hours battery life when web browsing with WiFi , which is lower than most comparable models at the same price point.

21. VAIO Z Canvas:
About the VAIO Z Canvas:

If you are looking for a very powerful tablet with a detachable keyboard, the VAIO Z Canvas is one of the best choices.

It is equipped with an highly powerful Intel i7-4770HQ Quad-Core CPU. Don’t be fooled: While it is an older CPU, this is an Intel quad-core CPU, more powerful than anything you’ll find in a tablet.

Depending on one of the three configurations available, you can get either a 256GB SSD with 8GB of RAM, a 512GB SSD with 16GB of RAM or a 1TB SSD with 16GB of RAM. The SSDs in this model are PCIe which makes them some of the fastest drives available.

Pros:
– Equipped with a powerful Intel i7-4770HQ Quad-Core + Hyper-Threading 2.2-3.4GHz CPU.
– 256GB, 512GB or 1TB SSD, depending on your configuration, for a fast booting speed and better responsiveness.
– 2-in-1 detachable screen to switch to tablet mode for whatever suits your needs.
– 8GB  or 16GB of DDR3 RAM.
– Detachable backlit keyboard included.
– Stylus is included
– 2 x USB 3.0 ports.
– Quad HD 2560 x 1704 resolution
– SD card reader.
– HDMI and Mini DisplayPort outputs to plug in your display on a external screen.
– RJ45 Ethernet port.
– Good aluminum body.
– IPS display panel for better contrasts, accurate colors and larger view angles.
– 802.11ac WiFi
– Bluetooth 4.1
– Amazing battery life : up to 11 hours.

Cons:

– Keyboard doesn’t have a backlight.
– Keyboard layout could be better : Arrows keys are relatively small, could be bothersome.
– Thick and heavy for a tablet: 11.8 x 0.7 x 8.4″ and 2.6lbs

22. Microsoft Surface Book

About the Microsoft Surface Book :

If you are looking for a detachable screen laptop that has a good performance, stunning display, stylish design, quality build (magnesium chassis) and great battery life, look no further than the Surface Book.

It comes in a wide variety of different configurations, my base recommendation being the model that has an Intel Core i5-6600U CPU with 8 GB of RAM, a dedicated Nvidia GPU and a 256GB PCIe SSD which are some of the fastest storage devices up to date. This model also has some configurations available with an higher performance GeForce GTX 965M which can be useful if you are looking into running programs that demand a better GPU such as Photoshop and Autocad.

This model also has a solid and quality build as well as a battery life that lasts on average 11 hours with the WiFi while browsing the internet which is great. Although when the screen is detached from the keyboard it only lasts up to 3 hours. If you are looking for a detachable that has a better battery in tablet mode, I strongly suggest going for the Microsoft Surface Pro 4.

The detachable keyboard is included on purchase and it also comes with a Microsoft Surface pen.

Pros:

– Equipped with an Intel i5-6300U Dual-Core + Hyper-Threading 2.4-3GHz CPU or i7-6500U Dual-Core + Hyper-Threading 2.5-3.1GHz CPU, depending on your configuration.
– 256GB, 512GB or 1TB PCIe SSD  that greatly improves the laptops responsiveness and booting speed.
– Between 8GB or 16GB of RAM depending on the chosen configuration.
– Amazing 11 hours battery life while browsing the internet with WiFi.
– IPS display panel for better contrasts, accurate colors and larger view angles.
– QHD 3000 x 2000 resolution display
– 1 Mini display port output to connect your display on a external screen.
– 2 x USB 3.0 ports.
– SD card reader.
– 802.11ac WiFi
– Bluetooth 4.0
– Good build quality: Magnesium chassis: Lightweight and solid
– Windows 10 Pro
– 2-in-1 detachable screen to switch to tablet mode for whatever suits your needs.
