I have a question for MathieuB, I have read a lot of posts out there about Amazon shipping parts (hard drives, for example) with little or no packaging, loose inside a box. Have you experienced this? If so, what items do you consider safe to buy from a poorly-packaging online store, and which are not?

Its all personal preference. For me, I look at both options and compare final prices to see which is better. Most of the time, online is better as you can compare more items, 24/7 and don't have to leave your room, (plus no taxes, in most states). However there are instances where brick & mortar stores can outprice internet prices (such as liquidation or sales). I am building a budget gaming system for a friend and settled on Q9300 CPU. It is an older chip that most sites sell for $200, even ebay has a buynow price for $150. However, at a local microcenter, it was going for $99. Point of the story? Shop around and decide for yourself.

It depends on your preferences, but for me:

Heavy items (Case, Monitor) can be a good idea to buy in a store (If you have the means to carry them around), as shipping can possibly be expensive on those items.

If I know exactly what you want and won't change my mind, then I'll probably buy everything online in order to save money. However, if I have doubts on a part, I might just buy it in a local store, for the convenience of being able to return it and get a new part easily and right away.

If there's something I want to try (example: monitors), I'll go in the store first and will most likely end up buying it online to save.

In general, I'll personnally buy everything online, unless:
a- I need to see/try it
b- I'm unsure about it and might end up returning it
c- shipping is too expensive.

Hope that helps,
Mathieu
