Computer Systems: Pages and sub-pages instead of posts!

Thumb it up! DeliciousSave this page

First post of 2009: I’m back!

That’s right, I’m back! Along with the new theme and this blog is now hosted on Media Temple, to handle any traffic surge coming from Digg, SU or anywhere else.

I still have a few things to fix or change with the new theme, including the about page which is half updated, the homepage sidebars which are a bit empty and a few other things. Please be patient. I will post an article with all the changes once that is done, somewhere this week.

New Computer Systems setup:

Over the holidays, as I was getting ready with the server transfer and all, I though of an idea for the Computer Systems:

Instead of “updating” them by starting over and making a new post for every computer system every two months as they become outdated, why don’t I just don’t create a waste vast array of pages?!

I already have the Computer Systems page, I’ll simply create sub-pages with every type of computer systems and sub-sub pages for different types of gaming PCs. Here’s an example of what I mean

Computer Systems:

Desktops:

  • Reader’s Requests
  • Gaming Computers:
    • Pure Performance
    • Ultra Look
    • Overclocking Dream
    • Lan-Party
  • Office Computers
  • HTPC
  • Silent PCs
  • Green PCs
  • 3D Modeling/Rendering and Video/Photo Editing Computers
  • Low cost Computers

Laptops: Coming soon ;)

Keep in mind, this is just an example. The actual names and way that I’ll classify the PCs are not set in stone yet.

The advantages of doing this:

That way, I’ll just actually have to update anything (price, new part, better description) and the effort will be cumulative over time instead of being wasted every ~2 months. I much prefer to enhance a page ten times than to post a new imperfect post ten times!

Not to mention, that will be WAY more effective in many many ways, i.e. as I’ll build backlinks and comments over time!

This will also fix my two biggest issues:

  • People visit outdated computer systems posts, through social media/google/backlinks, which looks bad because they are outdated, so they simply leave right away, with a bad impression of the blog in general.
  • I had two different computer systems urls, the page one and the category one. The page one is well organised, but the category one isn’t at all. That was also confusing for visitors and even more on the new theme!! So, if my computer systems category is gone and replaced by pages, that won’t be a problem anymore =D

That will also give me more time (updating takes a few minutes vs ~2 hour for a post!? and exposure to my other original posts too, as they won’t clutter my main page anymore. Also, as stand-alone posts, they aren’t that effective, as they only target one very specific market. For example, a budget gaming PC won’t interest an hardcore player.

Together, in sum-up pages or top 10 or best of, they can be effective though, as they can cover the whole range of the market.

When will this happen?

Starting tomorrow, I will begin to transfer all the computer system posts and convert them to pages. I will this as quickly as possible and I hope complete this by Friday.

Will I have to change my bookmarks?

Hopefully, no. I will re-direct the posts url to the new pages. That is, for example the $500 gaming system post url will re-direct you to the $500 gaming system page instead. During the process, you may hit a 404, page not found page. If that’s the case, please contact me with the information on the post that you were trying to view and I’ll fix it as quickly as possible!

If you do have to update them, this will be the last time, as the urls will never change afterward.

Conclusion:

This change will greatly improve your experience, as I’ll be able to update computer systems more quickly and more often. Also, I’ll be building upon each page, increasing the quality of them over time, instead of starting from scratch every time and delivering sub-par posts.
