Confessions of a tech blogger

By Mathieu • Sep 8th, 2008 • Category: Articles

Hey everyone.

I have a confession to make: Lately, I’ve not been myself, as a blogger.

Instead of taking the time to write about what I really like, I was trying to write the same way as other tech blogs and websites. I was trying to be another Engadget or TechCrunch.

I also got my friend to write daily updates about tech news, without too much success, as he wasn’t really into it and on top of that, he had problem with his internet connection for several days last week. I tried to take over him, but I’m into reading those news, not copying and posting them.

I thought about the blog this weekend and what I realized is this wasn’t me. I was simply doing the same as other, I lost the joy that I had when I started blogging, it wasn’t fun to write anymore, it became a chore!

Thanks to a good friend, I also realized that I’m trying to monetize this blog too much and that it’s likely to repulse many of you, along with Google and social media websites readers. He’s right, when I read a blog/website, I want helpful information, not a bunch of ads or products placement!

Let me get this clear: I want to make this blog as successful as possible. I want to be heard by as many people as possible, I want to help as many people as possible with computers.

I’m also hoping that one day, I can somehow live off this blog, be able to re-invest into it, buy some parts to review them and perharp travel to big tech conventions :D That’s a long-term goal however and I still have a long way to go before acheiving that goal.

What’s going to change? Let me state that in a few points:

No more ads: Gone, no more ads on any pages. By the time you’ll be reading this, they will be all gone.

My future computer systems post will no longer like a huge spam page. I will integrate every computer part link into the post itself, in a seamlessly way, which will make the post much more interesting for you.

What will I do to improve?

I’ll be myself: I’ll write passionately, about what interests me and I hope, interests you as well.

I’ll be unique: I’ll entirely create new content, not simply report what others wrote about already.

I’ll answer to every single e-mail I get from you, my readers: I’ve been procrastinating lately and it’s time that I drop that attitude. My goal is to help you, so I shall do that by answering every single one of you!

Most importantly: I’ll enjoy writing my posts, I’ll enjoy the conversations that I will have with you!

I may know a lot about computers, but I’m new to blogging, to interaction with my readers and online social networks. This is my stand, this is where I took the time to stop and realise what I’ve done so far. I’m far from perfect and I can still improve a lot.

Let me know what do you think. Tell me how do you think that I can improve this blog?

Yeah I remember the same thing happening to me too. I got hooked on social bookmarking, lost my own writing style, gave too much crap about what people expected me to write, etc, etc. But, one day I realized it.

Well I’m all good now and things are looking pretty good for me. I guess it was a turning point for me. You’ve got a nice idea, unique content and you know what you’re talking about. I’m sure you’ll do great. Good luck!

Good luck with the blog man, I’m sure it will get big in time… As long as you have good content there’s going to be people who will want to read it.
