Hardware Revolution: Best of July

Today, I’d like to look back on the month of July and share with you the best articles that I’ve posted during that month, talk about the recent layout change, tell you some interesting stats, ask you your opinion on the new layout, on the ads placement and finally, give you an insight on what’s coming up on Hardware Revolution.

I’ll start with Acer releases The One: Atom-based SubNotebook. In that post, I talk about what is my opinion, the best all around subnotebook available right now, considering what if offers and it’s low price. Let me resume it to you. Hardware wise, it comes with an Intel Atom processor (1.6GHz, single core but hyper-threading enabled, uses only 2.5W at load), 512MB or 1GB of ram and a 8GB SSD or a 120GB hard drive and a 9″ screen, with a 1024 x 600 resolution. It comes with Linux or Windows XP home. It’s aggressively priced, starting at $379.

What made me go nuts about it? Its keyboard; which is big enough to type easily and fast on it(I went in a Staples to try it out), its look, its battery life(Nearly 6 hours with a 6-cell battery!) and the price obviously. So much in fact that I’m planning on buying one in September, when the version with the 6-cell battery arrives on the market.

I’ve learned a lot when designing A basic Computer for Internet Browsing and more. I never thought that you could actually design a fully functional computer, with brand new parts, for a mere $165. What about you?

I kept the very best for the end, with The best Video Card for your money: July 2008 post, in which I suggested to you the video card that offered the best performance at at different given price points. This post was and still is by far the most popular on Hardware Revolution, with over 87,000 pageviews in just a week! While it’s a bit outdated now, as such is the nature of computer parts, whose prices nearly everyday, with new parts introduced on a regular base, it remains an excellent reference.

With all the new Nvidia cards and the upcoming Radeon HD 4870 X2, expect the follow-up very shortly.

Talking about stats, July was the month where Hardware Revolution really lifted off. With over 100,000 page views and over 60,000 unique visitors, I was simply amazed and surprised by how popular this blog started to be in July. As a matter of a fact, I was literally flooded with e-mails by you, my readers, with various questions about computers systems. A big thanks to all of you for stopping by, reading my blog and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can if you contacted me, sorry for the delay.

The most obvious thing for you has to be the new layout. What do you think of it? I think that it’s much better, that it’s cleaner and structured in a better way. I was thinking of changing the colors a bit though, especially the gray background and bar at the top(Home, About me, etc). Perhaps some light blue. What’s your take on that, do you have any suggestion?

As you may have noticed, over the last weeks, I’ve started to put some ads on the blog. I’ve tried them in the posts, on the homepage, in various spots. I’m done moving them around now and there’s one in the beginning of each post, one before the comments section and that’s it. I’ve found that putting in other spots or having more than that becomes too visible and annoying. I think that this is a fair balance, as it helps may raise some money to pay the hosting and fund future projects for the blog and I think that they are not too annoying as it is now. I’d like to know what’s your opinion on that.

What’s in store for August? Of course, I’ll keep adding and updating more Computer Systems. Every Thursday, starting this week, I’ll post a Best of type of article, where I’ll talk about computer parts with the best bang for the buck. I’m sure that you can guess which one is coming up this week haha. Every Saturday, starting this week as well, I’ll make a post with links to the most interesting computer related articles that I find on the web during that week.

I’ve also been discussing with my best friend and there’s a possibility that he joins the team on Hardware Revolution. He would contribute by posting links to various parts reviews on the web everyday, for those of you who are looking to buy parts but can’t decide on which one(s) to choose. I’ll give you more news on that eventually. That’s it for today, looking forward to see you tomorrow.
