Poll: How much are you willing to pay for Windows 7?

Thumb it up! DeliciousSave this page

Every other week, I add a new poll to Hardware Revolution.

The question for the poll that is up for the next two weeks, until January 31st at 11:59:59PM is:

1How much are you willing to pay for Windows 7?

The available answers are:

  1. $0 – It should be included as a free upgrade to Vista!
  2. $0 – I will download it off Torrents
  3. Up to $100
  4. $101-$149
  5. $149-$199
  6. $200+

How do I vote?

On the right of this post, you will see the poll and the answers. Select your answer and click on vote. It’s that simple and of course, it’s free. The poll is visible from any page.

What’s my opinion on the subject?

In my case, I think that it depends on where you come from; I mean what is your current version of Windows.

If you have any version of Vista, I believe that Windows 7 should come as a free upgrade, because Vista was such a disappointment. That would be an excellent way for Microsoft to regain market share and most importantly, regain customer’s loyalty toward the Windows brand. We all know how badly that was hurt with Vista.

If you have XP, it is my opinion that Microsoft should offer a low cost, stripped-down (read efficient) version of Windows 7, for two reasons:

  1. To ensure the transition of XP users to Windows 7, both for customer loyalty and profits.
  2. The stripped-down version would help in making sure that the requirements would be low enough to run on any machine that runs Windows, thus avoiding having many angry corporate clients who have no reason otherwise to upgrade their hardware systems.

That version would fit in the “Up to $100″ choice. Any more than $100 and it’s too expensive as an upgrade version to XP. Now, I’ve read that XP won’t be upgradeable to Windows 7 and if that is the case, then that is a huge mistake on Microsoft’s end. Why? The market share of Windows XP is still huge and Microsoft is missing on a big opportunity to convert them.

With new PCs or as a stand-alone copy, Windows 7 needs to be reasonably priced, considering the tough economic times. Also, please Microsoft; don’t repeat the error that you’ve made with Vista: Don’t offer four different versions. Way too confusing for your average customer. Two versions, one at $129 and the other at $179, would be perfect in my opinion.

While I’m at it, since the Beta is available as a download, why not offer the possibility to download and burn your DVD of Windows 7? Throw in a rebate of $10 and I’m sure that a lot of people would be interested! Want multiple copies? Download once, buy multiple licenses. That would be simple and effective. Now, is that going to happen? Highly doubt it…

What’s your opinion on the matter?

How much are you willing to pay? What do you think of offering Windows 7 as a free upgrade to Vista users? What about a rebate when downloading it online? Let us know your opinion in the comment section!

If it's over S$365 in retail, that's just scrawly.

Considering how similar it is to Vista though I think they should have like 'upgrade' packages which cost <$100 so you can change a Vista system to W7.
  • I agree with you on the versions. Microsoft went WAY too far with the different flavors of Vista. There were actually 5 editions sold: Home Basic, Home Premium, Business, Enterprise, and Ultimate. They need to cut that out and just offer a Home and Business Edition, like XP had. I think a price point of around $150 for Home Edition and $350 for Business is fair.

From what I know, Microsoft will discontinue Vista in favor of Windows 7 but XP might still be there for a while for netbooks.

I would also prefer a single version with everything included, then again, not everyone needs/care for every feature, so the lower price on the low-end editions are interesting from that point of view.

How much am I willing to pay depends what I can get away with. I have the beta right now and that will last untill august. I should be a vista sp3. are they really going to have xp, vista and 7 being used. I think they should have xp(for those that need it to run software) and just upgrade the vista users to 7.

What I would think is fair is let me pay the same price that oems pay to include it. and give me everything no multiply SKUs
  • It should be $100 or less
