Share your PC specs!

Thumb it up! DeliciousSave this page

For today’s post, I invite you to comment with your PC specs. Whether it’s a pre-configured desktop, a fully customized PC, a laptop, a netbook or any PC specs that you want to share, that’s good! You have several computers? Post the specs of all of them, or your favorite one, as you wish!

Why? Simply because you can learn a lot by looking at other PCs specs, parts that are matched together and because I want you to engage with our community. I’m very curious, I love PC Hardware and I’m sure that I’m not the only one, so asking for your PC specs just makes sense ;)

Also, tell us what you use your PC for and if your current PC meets your requirements. If not, what you like/change?

Need some guidelines?

Feel free to use this for a desktop PC:

  • Brand/Model: If pre-configured/laptop, otherwise indicate Custom
  • Processor: Model and speed. Overclocked? Feel free to add voltage/cooling, screenshots links.
  • Motherboard: Brand/Model/Modification
  • RAM : Quanity/Speed/Timings
  • Hard drive: Capacity, RPM, SATA or IDE, any RAID array, size (1.8″, 2.5″ or 3.5″)
  • Video card: Model, SLI/Crossfire, overclocking?
  • Case: Model; Any modification?
  • Cooling: Cpu heatsink/fan, case fan, water-cooling, etc.
  • Power Supply:
  • Operating System: Windows XP? Vista? SP1/2/3? Home? Basic? Pro? 32 bit? 64 bit? Linux?
  • How much did you pay for it?
  • When was it bought/built?
  • Screen size/resolution

For laptops, add the following:
Battery life: With wifi? Screen brightness?
Weight

Add anything you’d like to mention, such as overclocking, any particular tweeking/software that you’ve done/are using, etc.
Are you planning on upgrading it? Any future project?

I’ll start with my laptop:

It’s an HP tx 1000
AMD Turion X2 TL-66, running at 2.3GHz
2GB of DDR2-677MHz SO-Dimm in dual-channel
160GB Hard Drive
Integrated Geforce 6100
12″ screen, 1280×1024 touchscreen
Battery lasts about 3 hours, with WIFI and full-screen brightness
Weights about 4lbs
OS: Windows XP Pro SP3
I paid $355 USD, bought it used on Ebay.

I use RightMark to undervolt the cpu and control the speed via a profile. That way the cpu stays cooler (The tx series are plagued with overheating problems…) and the laptop has a longer battery life. I plan to open it to put arctic silver 5 for the cpu cooler, hopefully lowering the temperature even more. Right now, it’s running at 50-60C on idle/low usage and tops at 75-80C during heavy load. Quite too hot for my laptop when sitting on a chair, but I can live with that right now.

I’m sure some of you remember my desktop computer, which is no more. Still, I’ll post its specs:

  • Custom made
  • E5200, lapped running at 4.1GHz
  • ASUS P5B-E, changed the northbridge heatsink, added a few small heatsinks and did the pencil v-droop mod.
  • 2GB (2×1GB) Crucial Ballistix. DDR2 800Mhz at stock, can’t remember the overclocked speed. 4-4-4-12 at stock
  • Two Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 250GB 7200rpm 16MB cache in a 500GB RAID 0 Array
  • Sapphire X1950 Pro, kept stock since it was fast enough for the games I was playing
  • Antec 900, with two hole drilled in the back for the tubing of my water-cooling setup
  • Swiftech CPU and GPU waterblocks, Swiftech MCR320-QP 3×120mm radiator, Swiftech MCP355 pump, with a Petra’s Tech top, a Swiftech reservoir, 6x 120mm fans, with 1/2″ OD Tubing. Arctic Silver 5
  • Antec HE 550 Watts
  • Windows XP Pro SP3
  • Paid about $1500 if I remember well and an extra $100 for the cpu upgrade (From E6300 to E5200)
  • Built in the summer of 2007
  • 19″ 1280×1024

What do I mean it’s no more? I disassembled it recently and as a matter of a fact, I’m selling the cpu, motherboard, RAM, Hard Drives, Video Card and Power Supply on Ebay.

I know, I know, what kind of power user am I to use only a laptop? :P With all the advancement in computing power in the last few years and the fact that I no longer play video games, I no longer need that much power and I simply prefer the mobility of a 12″ laptop.

Anyway, enough of me! Go on and comment with your PC specs, what your use it/them for and your personnal experiences. I can’t wait to hear from you and discuss with you.

    My PC is totally broken.
  • Mathieu
@Jathan: So, how are you posting this comment?
  • Ben
I just use my lovely desktop:

    *Hp Media Center PCm7160n
    *Pentium D Processor, 2.80GHz (2 CPUs)
    *Phoenix - Award BIOS v6.00PG
    *3GB (1 built-in + 2x 1GB) Crucial DDR PC2 3200, not overclocked, I just leave 'em alone and they do just fine
    *225GB Hard Drive
*GeForce 9500 GT, 1024MB Total Memory
*17'' Samsung SyncMaster 930B (analog sadly) monitor, 1280x1024
    *Stock case
    *Case fan and heatsink-cooled
    *Windows XP SP3

I paid about... $1100 for the PC back in the summer of '05. I upgraded the RAM and its video card within the next couple of months; bought a GeForce 7800 and the RAM at the same time. Its a little dated when compared to the current generation of say, Core 2 Duos and whatnot. However it keeps plugging along and I've never had any problems with it!

When I initially bought it I was into the whole 3D modeling scene but I grew out of that and changed my focus to gaming. I still currently use it for gaming, school projects, and work-related stuff.

Although I'm pretty good at recognizing what is and what isn't computer-related, I'm no expert so if any of the specs I posted are wrong, please let me know. I enjoy learning anything new, and it will just help me make smarter decisions in the future!

  • I have a laptop, a SONY VAIO, 1,8 GHz processor, 2,00 GB Ram, 200 GB hard drive, 15.4" LCD monitor.

@Ben: For a 4 y.o computer, it still does very well. Upgrading it along the way is definitely a good idea. I remember my 2.8GHz Pentium 4 Northwood from that time. While it was only a single-core, it was the part of the first generation of cpus with Hyper-Threading enabled, which made opening multiple windows and programs so MUCH faster.

Your hard drive is probably a 250GB model, but due to how things are calculated and if you consider that there might be an HP recovery partition, it shows up as 225GB under Windows, perfectly normal in the end.

Do you have any plan for upgrading it in the future?
  • Mathieu
@iregulate: That's one solid gaming rig, needless to say.

Are you running everything stock or have you overclocked any part? Considering the cooling, power supply and especially the cpu, it would be a crime not to overclock it :P
  • I just got a MacBook Pro.
    2.4 ghz processor
    2 gigs ram
    220 gig HD
Going to add more ram to support parallels, but very satisfied.
  • Mathieu
@Andrew: Looks like a Core Duo laptop from what I can tell. My previous laptop was based on the Core Duo as well, which offers great performance for an excellent price.

I wasn't aware that there was a 1.5GHz version though, unless that's SpeedStep kicking in? Hmmm.

In any case, looks like a pretty good laptop, as long as you don't game on it. What do you use it for?
  • Mathieu
@Anto: Good to have you back. Thanks for sharing your laptop specs with us. If I may ask, what made you choose a Sony VAIO laptop over other brands? Was it just the right set of features, the look, the brand reputation? I'm curious to know =)
  • Mathieu
@VitaminCM: I keep hearing good things about Macs, regarding their simplicity and how easy they are to use. I'm tempted to try one, but I just can't see how I could manage to relearn everything from the start, after being opening up/using PCs for over 8 years. I know you can run Windows on Macs, but doesn't that defeat the purpose of a Mac?

There's also the fact that you can't really build your own computer with a Mac OS. It makes sense from a business POV (exclusivity of Mac OS on Macs, easier for tech support, higher profits, etc.) and from a user POV for people who just want their computer to work.

Thanks for taking the time to comment =)

    4 GB RAM
    1 TB 3.5" HDD
    Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTS

Vista Home Premium 32 bit (hope to upgrade to 64 this summer)

Paid about $2500 for it when the E6850 was brand new.

I use a 24" Dell monitor running at 1900x1200, absolutely beautiful. But honestly, that resolution hits this machine a tad hard. Still trying to decide if I should upgrade the GPU or the CPU first.

    @Mathieu:

Yes, you're right, I do have the Hp recovery partition so I must have the 250GB hard drive. Not that I've ever needed it all but you know :D

And as for the future, I will probably upgrade my processor to something newer but I have no plans as of yet. But considering my past history of upgrading it'll probably happen sooner or later!
  • @Mathieu Yeah-- variable overclock based on temperature. Last night I got home and it was 86*F ambient in the room. Had to dial back the overlock :)
  • Aleksander
Do u know what 86*F means?
    86-230=-144!!!!
U live in a frozen planet or smth like that???
The least temperature in earth is -88!!!
I hope that u were drunk when u saw the temperature!! :)
  • Mathieu
Your conversion formula is wrong. 86F is equivalent to 30C ;)

  • Mathieu
Yeah, that's the main drawback with air-cooling, ambient temperature limits how cool your setup will be.

What is your average speed and what is your max? Out of interest.
  • Mathieu
Interesting build, although it raises a question in my mind:

Why the 40GB 2.5" hard drive? Did you take it from a previous laptop?

And nothing wrong with a 21" CRT =D Nothing better than a CRT for games, no delay at all.

What do you use your PC for out of interest?
  • Mathieu
    Nice system :)

What do you use it for?
  • Mathieu
Sounds like you have great ventilation in your system, for your CPU to use no fan!

Agreed, 1900x1200 hits a machine. I'd say that your GPU should be upgraded, at high resolution, that is your bottleneck.

Make sure to get a model with at least 1GB of memory, makes a big difference at that resolution. 2GB is not overkill, better to be future-proof.

I'd suggest that you take a look at the Radeon 4870 2GB, especially this model from Sapphire: http://bit.ly/bJkRV
It features a very silent cooler, which is a good change compared to most of the noisy high-end card. As for the 4870 gpu, it definitely offers the best value at the moment, offering high-end performance at a mainstream price.

If you prefer sticking to Nvidia, think again. The next step-up is a GTX 285 and at nearly twice the price of the 4870, it's not worth it IMO, for the small improvement compared to the big price hike. Just not a good value.
  • Mathieu
Pretty good deal considering it's an HP and comes with a Geforce 7600/high resolution.

My friend paid $1000 for an Acer in Mars 07 or so, and it was a 1.6Ghz Core Duo, with an Intel 950 and 1280x1024 resolution.

As you said, it does the job. That's what matters most. That your PC answers YOUR needs. =)
  • Mathieu
Considering the time that it was build in and price paid, you got a pretty good deal.

For the RAM, what's the configuration? 128MB+256MB I'm guessing? And isn't DDR memory? Guessing so from what I see online when I search for the motherboard.

If that's the case, you can easily upgrade to 1GB(2x512MB in dual channel) for a reasonable $36.99, including free shipping http://bit.ly/9Gaby

Or if you want to be more future proof and really run things smoothly, go with 2GB(2x1GB dual channel) for $25 more, with free shipping as well at $61.99 http://bit.ly/XPXIS

RAM is still cheap now, never been a better time to upgrade ;)
  • Mathieu
What a great system build there. Definitely a good combination of parts to avoid any bottleneck, a well-balanced design.

I have no problem with you mentioning stores names. I personally recommend NewEgg to anyone I know, due to their low prices, quick shipping and great customer support, but if you had good experiences with other online stores, feel free to share it with us =)

And I understand the need for your wife to cool off about the computer build ^^ I've the same problem with my ex, whom didn't understand the value of PC parts and why it's better to invest more to be future-proof and get reliable parts.

Luckily for you, 22" and 24" are at all-time low prices, which will be easier to justify and easier on your wallet =)
  • Mathieu
Pretty good system, especially for the time you've got it. Still running strong today I bet, those P4 Northwood are solid performers and were nothing short of amazing back when they were launched. 2GB of RAM sure helps too.

"I had more configurations of case fans than anyone in the world."

What do you mean by that? Share that with us :)
  • Mathieu
I would watch that +12V line, it's quite low at 11.25V. Within the 10% margin of ATX specifications, but still very low.

You mention having a 550W power supply, but what brand/series is it? Total Wattages is important, but not as important as quality.
  • Mathieu
Glad to hear so about upgrading =)

If I can recommend, wait until the end of the year. Intel should release their mainstream cpu based on the Core i7, along with the mainstream chipset.

Even if you have no desire to upgrade to that platform, keep in mind that:

A: Core 2 Duo/Quad parts will go down in price.
B: AMD will have to reply to that, driving competition, which is always good for us
C: DDR3 is becoming mainstream, meaning that it will reach DD2 prices soon.
  • Mathieu
Pretty good system, even though the power supply seems totally overkill to me. Good if you decide to SLI or upgrade to a Quad-Core and still overclock though.

I'm curious though, why don't you upgrade your screen first? Considering the all-time low prices of 22" and 24", that might be something interesting for you to do.

Also, no point upgrading to 4GB, since you will be limited by the 32 bit specs. 32 bit limits your system to a total of 4GB of addressable memory. Keyword: Your System, not just the RAM

Meaning that you can only use what is left after substracting the amount of memory on your video card from 4GB. Your video card has 896MB, meaning that 32 bit Windows won't be able to adress more than 3.1GB of RAM. And there are other things using memory addresses.

So a 1GB ram upgrade is useless, unless you are ready to upgrade to an 64-bit OS.

Not to mention that games don't use over 2GB of RAM, except under a 64-bit OS, for the very rare games that have a 64-bit .exe available.

Thought you might want to know this ;)
  • Dennis
NewEgg is where everything except the mouse and keyboard came from. I have had lots of good luck with them over the past year. All items shipped quickly and, knocking on wood, no DOA's on anything I've ordered.

Thanks for the compliment on the system build. I appreciate it.

When was it bought/built? I started building it this year and it is still in progress, as I'm upgrading the hard drives in June. I also found a 19in dell monitor at Arc thrift for $50 so I use that.

yo my PC pretty old now therefore compared to the price and what you get these days its pretty dated but i'm surprised it is still running smoothly as I do regular maintenance like AV scans and so on.

Yeah anyway it's a Dell Dimension 5000 was around £800-900 at the time I think, can't remember exact date when bought but it must be at least 2-3 years now.

    CPU: Intel Pentium 4 3.00GHz
    RAM: 1GB 667MHz
    GFX: ATI Radeon X300 (128MB)
    HDD: 160GB
    Display: 19"

    :P

SO yeah nothing special but at least it's still running and it has a great 19" screen which Im happy with and nice speakers and subwoofer that came with pack. Other then that i can't go into detail with any of the parts/specs as it's not custom built and bought few years ago.

Rather then updating I'll probably build my own box some time soon with a nice mobo which can run intel duo or quad core and at least 4GB RAM, decent graphics card like nvidia geforce 9600gso or ati radeon 3850 and a big 500GB HDD for storage :)
  • Anvie
Hi I am going to build my server for DB and web. How's your server specs? is it good enough? I also like to know how much power supply do you have and fan. And if your server is on 24/7?

Thanks! your reply is greatly appreciated ;)

    Intel Core 2 Duo E7400 at 2.80Ghz
    4GB DDR2 Ram
2x ATI Radeon HD 4650 1GB GDDR2 Video Cards in Crossfire
    500GB HDD 7,200 or 7,400 RPM forgot :D
    550 Watt Power Supply
    Stock Heat sinks and fans
    24" Dell LCD Widescreen 1920 x 1080

Plays all my games at highest details with minimal lag.
I'm happy. Planing to a quad core CPU.

    When brought About $1000 [Came with 2GB Ram and a Nvidia 9500GT 1GB GDDR2]
About $1200 [With the addition of 2x graphics cards and 2Gb ram]

well i use mine as a back up server so total space is close to 2.5 tb total but i only use a 200gig hard drive for the data base that i use for my dvd collection and its only 50 mb data base depends on what you will have in your DB and what you would have on the webserver. For a basic web site you will do fine with a 200gig up to 500gig depending on what you plan on put in the web server
  • cano1984
hmm maybe i should ready you question better, the case that i am useing is 25" long and is very roomie, it holds 10 drives right know i have 8 in there do to the mob limits. it run fine for what i use it for.

    Custom Rig-

Processor-Intel Core2 Quad CPU Q6600 @2.4 GHz (Running at stock Speeds)

Mother Board: Asus P5N-D (Replaces a xfx 780i board that I got originally for it, which did not like it's paint job... grrrrr..!)

    RAM- (x4)sticks of 2 Gig DDR2 at 1066

Hard Drives: Seagate Barracuda 7200 160 Gig (Operations Drive)
WD Caviar SE 500 Gig (Main Storage Drive)
Simple Drive 500 Gig (External- Back-up Drive)

Video Cards: (x2 in SLI) XFX GeForce NVIDIA 9800 GTX (Running at Stock settings)

Case: Ultra Aluminus (Black with Clear Lid) Custom switches for lights installed with nippers. Tucked under inner case door. Black Light Blue Atomic symbol (sticker) on glass
Fans: V1 CPU heat sink/fan. Large custom Heat sink added to Mother board, (x4) 120 mm Ultra Violet Blue Case Fans. (x2) Black Light Rods (12" each). Each wire tucked, wrapped (ultra blue), and painstakingly zipped into place for maximum air flow and cool looks.

Power Supply: Started with a 600 Watt Cool Master. But went up to a 1600 Watt Ultra. With current wall plug am able to draw 1200 watts... Going to have to change the houses service box and all wiring in the walls to get more power for the beast. lol

    Operating System: XP 64 Professional

Cost: Without Flat Screen TV- approx. $1900

    Was put together in mid-2008

Screen Size/ Resolution: LG 42' 120Hz. 1080p. (true-motion) / 1600/1200 Resolution is solid but using 1920 made her crashie as hell!

    Other little add ons...
    Razor-Death Adder Mouse
    Razor- Barracuda Gaming Head phones
    Razor/Belkin N52te
    Logitech G-11 Keyboard
    Razor Exact Mat
    Custom made gaming Chair...!

Over 50 hours of Custom Painting on Interior Case and parts.

Additional information: In order to run the 8 Gigs of RAM we need to use a 64-bit OS (XP Professional). This forced use to use the second computer for camera, printer and any other non-64-bit friendly hardware/software to have an interface... Networked drives tie it all together nicely... The twin screens mounted with easy turning brackets ( screwed right through the base into a 1"x3" piece of pine I put on the wall... lol)

    That's my PC :) (about 1 year old ) (Cost : about 1.400Euros)

I have only one question if someone knows:
I installed recently the fan speed control and temps monitor by AEROCOOL but i don't know how exactly to put the temps sensor to the CPU because the cooler by Scythe is a little big . Should i put the sensor between the CPU and Scythe ? or in a spot at Scythe cooler near the CPU?

Thank you very much for your time :D
  • Aleksander
    Yo man!
What, are u crazy to have 4 GB ram and a 32-bit OS!!!!!
U are not using at least 1 GB ram and u have 4 rams 1 GB very bad....
U should upgrade to windows vista 64-bit immediately if u dont want to damage some more voltage in your computer
I recommend u to take at least 1 ram out of your motherboard and to put it until u have upgraded the OS.
Upgrade the 4 rams 1 GB to 2x2 GB. U will see the benefits as soon as u will listen to my advise.
  • Mathieu
While you are right on that one is better with a 64 bit OS to use 4GB of RAM or more and that two sticks of RAM are better than four, especially for overclocking, this won't damage his computer.

I do not recommend taking out one stick, as this would prevent his RAM from running in dual channel.

The only benefits in up to 2 x 2 GB vs 4 x 1 GB is that you're likely to be able to overclock further, if your motherboard/memory controller is your current bottleneck that is.
