Poll results: For Computer Hardware, do you prefer to shop at Amazon or NewEgg?

Thumb it up! DeliciousSave this page

During the last two weeks, I’ve run a poll with the following question:

For Computer Hardware, do you prefer to shop at Amazon or NewEgg?Do you prefer to shop at Amazon or NewEgg?

Voters were allowed to choose only one answer and couldn’t vote more than once. In total, we received 45 votes.

Here are the results:

The majority of you,40 votes/89% voted for NewEgg.

The rest of you, 5 votes/11% voted for Amazon.

What could explain such results?

  • NewEgg focus mainly on Electronics, Computer parts, laptops and such. On the other hand, Amazon sells about everything you can think about. NewEgg has the upper hand because it’s specialized.
  • In my opinion, it’s much easier to navigate and find products on NewEgg.
  • NewEgg have the reputation of having the best prices and in my experience, they do most of the time.
  • NewEgg ships extremely quickly, while Amazon is not so fast.
  • NewEgg offers great customer service.

Why such limited options?

Some of you pointed out that the options were limited to an American audience. While my computer systems designs are good for anyone, in any country, the majority of readers here on Hardware Revolution are from the U.S.A.

So, I wanted to have your opinion on Amazon vs NewEgg, which are two of the biggest online retailers based in the U.S.A. I wanted to know which one of the two is better in your opinion.

Clearly, NewEgg won.

The reason I wanted to know this is because I post many Computer Systems designs and I use a store as a benchmark for prices. I’ve used NewEgg for many months now and I will continue to do so.

What if I’m not based in the U.S.A.?

Simply shop to your favorite shop in your country. You can still use my Computer Systems designs as they remain excellent designs to build upon. In many countries, you can shop on Ebay, which remains an excellent place to find great deals.

Canada: A reader recommended NCIX.com, which is indeed a great place to shop at. So is Tigerdirect.ca in my opinon. There is a NewEgg.ca as well, but their products choice/selection is still limited.

What’s your opinion?

Let me know in the comments, where do you shop for your computer hardware and why?

Amazon has really stepped up their competition for hardware. The prices are competitive most of the time with newegg and they cross-ship RMA which newegg refuses to do. I had a DOA hard drive from amazon and they overnighted a replacement before I ever sent the defective one back. Newegg forces you to order a completely new one first in order to get any resemblance of a cross ship. I'm planning on buying all my new hardware products from amazon if the price is even remotely competitive; simply because they cross-ship. NewEgg really needs to wake up and cross-ship their RMAs and pay for shipping the defective one back (which amazon does also).

Newegg lost my business a month or so ago. For some reason they billed me and shipped an order that I did not complete. I even called them that same day to cancel (note that the order had not shipped at this time) - they said I have to refuse the package when UPS delivers it.

Never again will I deal with them.

I'm sorry to hear that Jeffrey, I hope that it got resolved since then.

If you haven't read about it, I'm sure that you'll be happy to hear that I'm now also linking to Amazon and ZipZoomfly for hardware parts.

You can read more about it in the following post: Offering you more options to bring you the best prices http://www.hardware-revolution.com/offering-you...

I voted in that poll! Im not from the U.S.A. but i voted for newegg. They seem to be a nice benchmark for prices of computers in america. Ive come across those sites NCIX and Tigerdirect also. Tigerdirect actually semm to have an irish wing (misco.ie). You can get to it from the tigerdirect site. There are some deals to be found on this side of the atlantic also. My usual haunts would be ebuyer.com, www.novatech.co.uk, scan.co.uk, komplett.ie and dabs.ie. Its interesting to see your computer configurations and compare them to what we have here for similar money. Usually id spec budget to midrange computers.

My most recent build has been an

    Athlon x2 7750BE
    Biostar 790gx mobo
    4GB corsair xms2 ram
500GB Samsung spinpoint sata hard drive
    Coolermaster igreen 600W psu
    Coolermaster Elite 335 case
    Logitech X240 2.1 speakers
So far Ive spent less than 450euro

    upgrades Id like next

HD4850/HD4830 graphics card. One thats not too loud. Theres a few I have my eye on
Some sort of 22" monitor. Dunno how much id be willing to spend though.
Bluray recorder. One that plays HDDVD also would be nice. Ive noticed some cheap HDDVDs .
New keyboard and mouse. Im considering the logitech G11 or G15 keyboard, and the logitech G5 mouse.
