The Best Budget Laptops?
Many don’t have the knowledge to understand detailed computer specifications and just want to know: “What’s the best laptop for my needs and budget?”
By the best, I mean reliable laptops that offer the best performance at prices up to $999.
With 20 years of experience with computer hardware, keeping up with new products and ever-changing prices, I’m here to help you find the best deals. See my About page.
Here are the features that I evaluate in order to make my recommendations:
1. Price
2. Performance: CPU, RAM, Storage, Video Card and Wireless Adapter
3. Screen: Size, Resolution, Matte or Glossy, Panel type (TN, IPS, etc.), Brightness, Contrast, Viewing Angles and Color Accuracy
4. Portability: Dimensions, Weight, Real-life battery life during average web browsing?
5. Usability: Keyboard: Layout, Key size, Travel/Pressure, Key Shape and any additional Function keys. Touch pad quality, trackpoint, backlit keyboard, numpad, Operating System, which ports are offered, Webcam resolution, sound quality, optical Drive, noise levels.
6. Reliability: How solid is the chassis? Are the temperatures under load reasonable? How solid are the screen hinges? Is the keyboard spill-resistant? Overall manufacturer long-term reliability? How easy is it to service the laptop?
7. Warranty: Warranty length? What does the warranty cover?
I then recommend laptops that I think are the best, according to those features that I evaluated on hundreds of laptops.

What are Chromebooks?
Chromebooks are laptops that run the Chrome Operating System (OS) instead of Windows or Mac OS.
While using a Chromebook is different from a Windows or Mac laptop, if you have an Android device or have used Chrome before, you’ll feel just at home. Even if that isn’t the case, it’s easy to learn.
If you use your laptop to browse the web, check your e-mails, go on social media, watch Netflix and listen to Spotify, a Chromebook is a computer that is simple to use. Perfect for less tech-inclined familly or as a second computer.
They are simple to setup and secure:
1- Setup is very simple and only takes a few minutes.
2- Your computer starts in a few seconds.
3- Installing software, through the Google App store, is easy.
4- No concern with updates, or complicated software installation, the OS does it for you automatically.
5- Battery life is generally above average to exceptional, depending on the model.
6- Highly secure and with automatic updates, you’re unlikely to run into any virus or malware problems.
The Chrome OS is one of the most secure OS on the market. It includes security features such as sandboxing and categorizing websites that may be harmful. Chromebooks are outstanding at catching malware and viruses, so you’re unlikely to run into any problems of this sort.
Inexpensive and you can download many free applications:
Chromebooks are inexpensive computer compared to laptops running Windows, especially compared to Macbooks!
Need Office programs like Word, Excel, etc.? Google Docs offer Google equivalent for free, with automatic saving online, Google Drive to save and share your documents and the Google App store.
Chrome OS is a lightweight OS, so laptops running it boot quickly, feel snappy and are easy to use. If you’re looking for an inexpensive, great looking, simple to use and highly portable computer to browse the web, listen to music, read/write documents and stream videos, you should highly consider a Chromebook.
About the Acer Chromebook 514

Quad-Core Intel Celeron N3450/4GB RAM/64GB storage: – Click here to see the price on Amazon
WARNING:
Avoid the Intel Celeron N3350 CPU Acer Chromebook 514 and other Chromebooks equipped with it.
While it may appear as an attractive less-expensive alternative, the model equipped with the Celeron N3350 CPU offers anemic performance. There are other less expensive alternatives too, but I don’t recommend them because they feature awfully low-performance Intel Atom or AMD low-end dual-core CPUs or only 2GB of RAM, which wasn’t good enough years ago, let alone now!
I recommended at least the quad-core Celeron N3450 and 4GB of RAM.
So the Acer Chromebook 514 is the least expensive Chromebook that I recommend. Despite its low price, it feels like a much more expensive and modern laptop, with few compromises.
Featuring:
– An aluminium build, which is better than a cheap plastic chassis.
– A full HD 1920 x 1080 display, with an IPS panel for wide viewing angles, good contrast and colors and a none reflective finish.
– Charging through an USB Type-C port.
– A backlit keyboard
– A good trackpad
– Battery life is rated at an excellent up to 12 hours.
– Flash storage, for very quick boot and instant resume from sleep.
Its main downside is limited CPU performance: You get an Intel Celeron N3450 Quad-Core 1.1-2.2Hz CPU. While it is no powerhouse, it is significantly better than lower end dual-core models, but still no match for a modern Intel Core or AMD Zen CPU. That said, the Chrome OS uses much less resources than Windows or MacOS, so everyday performance is adequate for web browsing, checking email, documents, social media, etc.
As long as you don’t multitask heavily and don’t mind not having the fastest CPU, this Chromebook offers amazing value for the price.
Want more CPU performance? See the higher-end Acer Chromebook 714 or the HP below, available with Intel Core architecture CPUs.
Pros:
- Least expensive recommendation
- Intel Celeron N3450 Quad-Core 1.1-2.2GHz CPU: Not a powerhouse but significantly better than lower end dual-core models
- 4GB of RAM: Enough for web browsing and a few apps
- Three USB ports: Two USB Type-C with charging and Displayport output support and one USB 3.0 ports
- Great battery life of up to 12 hours.
- Aluminum build
- WiFi 5 802.11ac 2×2 Dual-Band
- Bluetooth 4.2
- Quite portable for a laptop with a 14″ display: 12.72 x 9.13 x 0.67″ and 3.09lbs
- Full HD 1920 x 1080 display
- IPS panel, meaning that you get wide viewing angles, good contrast and colors
- Touchscreen
- microSD card reader
Cons:
- RAM is soldered: You cannot add RAM
- No numpad.
- Storage is soldered and there’s no available M.2 slot to add a SSD. There’s a MicroSD slot and you can use Google Drive too.

The Acer Chromebook 714 is basically an higher-end version of the Acer Chromebook 514 recommended above.
You still get the aluminum build, an excellent 12 hours battery life as well as the Full HD 1920 x 1080 IPS display.
What you gain are more powerful CPU, more RAM, more storage, a backlit keyboard, a fingerprint reader, USB Type-C ports and a micro-SD card reader.
You lose the HDMI output, but get Displayport output from the USB Type-C, so you just need an adapter if you want HDMI output.
Choose between 3 hardware configurations, in order from slowest to fastest:
2. Intel Core i3-8130U Dual-Core / 4 threads 2.2-3.4GHz, 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage
2. Intel Core i3-8130U Dual-Core / 4 threads 2.2-3.4GHz, 8GB of RAM and 64GB of storage
3. Intel Core i5-8250U Quad-Core / 8 threads 1.6-3.4GHz , 8GB of RAMand 64GB of storage
Which one should you pick? Well, it depends on what you need and want. If you only want to browse the web and install a few apps, the entry-level option is fine. If you plan on having many tabs open, opt at least for the mid-level option, with its 8GB of RAM. If you want the highest performance for the fastest computing experience possible with this Acer Chromebook, opt for the Core i5-8250U model.

Ultrabooks: Thin, lightweight
The Best Standard screen ultrabooks:
Cheap laptops that I recommend avoiding:
Yes, there are slightly less expensive laptops but I don’t recommend them for one of the following reasons:
– Anemic CPU performance: Any laptop with an Intel Atom, AMD A9-9420e (or the like of low power old AMD SOC CPUs) or Intel Celeron dual-core CPU should be avoided.
– Lack of storage: Laptops with 32GB of storage should be avoided: It’s not enough storage for Windows and you’ll have issues with updates.

About the Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5
Available with multiple configurations, the Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 is an excellent all around 2-in-1 convertible laptop.
All models are equipped with a 14″ touchscreen with a Full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 and a fingerprint reader. Also standard is the backlit keyboard and a battery life up to 10 hours.
CPU wise, you have two choices, all based on the modern Intel Ice Lake architecture:
1- The Core i5-1035G1, a 1.0-3.6GHz Quad Core/ 8 threads CPU, which is a significantly upgrade compared to the Core i3.
2- The Core i7-1065G7, a 1.3-3.9GHz Quad-Core / 8 threads CPU, which is a small improvement compared to the Core i5. Unless you need all the performance that you can get, the Core i5 option is more cost effective.
You have the choice between only 4GB of RAM, which will limit you to running only a few apps and web pages, or 8GB, which is sufficient for most tasks and some multi-tasking. Note that the RAM is soldered and cannot be upgraded, so unless you’re tight on money, I’d opt for 8GB of RAM.
Storage wise, you have the choice between 128, 256 or 512GB of storage. Unless you store everything online, 128GB isn’t much, with Windows using a good part of it, so storage can become limited and can fill up pretty quickly. 256GB is an appreciable ammount and ought to be sufficient unless you install many program and have a significant media collection, in which case 512GB might be a better idea.
Pros:
- Inexpensive 2-in-1 convertible laptop
- 128-512GB SSD for fast boot and a more responsive system.
- 2-in-1 convertible screen to switch to laptop, display, tent or tablet mode for whatever suits your needs.
- Touchscreen with VA display panel for good contrasts, colors and fairly large viewing angles.
- Full size SD card reader
- Backlit keyboard
- Webcam
- 3 USB ports: 2x USB Type-A and 1x USB Type-C with Power Delivery
- HDMI output
- WiFi6 802.11ax MU-MIMO
- Battery life of up to 10 hours
Cons:
- No RJ-45 LAN Ethernet port
- No numpad
- RAM is soldered and cannot be upgraded

Apple Macbook
Apple MacBook Air 11 (MJVM2LL/A)

Renewed: – Click here to see the price on Amazon
About the MacBook Air 11:
This is the smaller variant, the 11-inch Macbook Air. I also recommend a recent Macbook Air 13-inch model below.
This is a renewed item, meaning that it has been restored to work and look like a new product, with minimal to no signs of wear, by a specialized third-party seller approved by Amazon. This is my recommendation if you want an Apple Macbook at the lowest cost possible. There are less expensive options, but with only 4GB of RAM, which is not enough nowadays.
This laptop is highly portable, solid, reliable, has a good excellent battery life, great backlit keyboard and an excellent trackpad.
Pros:
- Least expensive Macbook laptop.
- Thin and lightweight: Only 2.38lbs and 0.11-0.68″ thick. Perfect if you’re traveling and often on the move.
- It’s an Apple computer: Mac OS X, Time Machine backup (automatically backs up system data to an external hard drive), many built-in apps, highly reliable, excellent customer service
- Excellent keyboard, great for typing
- Backlit keyboard
- High-end performance storage makes your computer feel more responsive.
- Very quiet: The fan is hardly audible, unless you push the CPU to 100% for a long time.
- Long battery life: 12 hours of web browsing (when new, used will be undoubtedly lower)
- Solid chassis: All-aluminum unibody
- Solid screen hinge
- Excellent trackpad, with great multi-touch support
- MagSafe power connector which automatically detaches from your laptop if you pull on it, preventing your Macbook from accidentally falling if you trip on the power cord.
- Bluetooth
Cons:
- Limited amount of ports: 2x USB 3.0, one ThunderBolt 2 (Mini DisplayPort via Thunderbolt port) and a combo audio jack.
- Low screen resolution: Only 1440 x 900 resolution. Poor compared to the Macbook 12″ or Macbook Pro with their high-resolution Retina displays.
- Average CPU performance: Fine for web browsing, music, Office work and lightweight programs. Not ideal for heavy photo/video editing, heavy multitasking or demanding programs where high sustained CPU performance is required. You’ll want a more powerful CPU and possibly more RAM for better performance, so consider a Macbook Pro instead.
- Limited GPU (graphic card) performance. Forget playing modern video games or 3D rendering: you want a dedicated video card for that. Once again, a Macbook Pro would be a better option.
- No LAN port
- No optical drive. You can get an external USB powered optical drive, if you want to.
- No Numpad
- Limited amount of storage
- Limited amount of RAM: 8GB is fine for web browsing, music, Office work and lightweight programs. Not ideal for heavy photo/video editing, heavy multitasking or demanding programs.
- The Macbook Air RAM cannot be upgraded: It’s soldered. The SSD storage can be upgraded if you have the right tool, don’t mind following a guide to disassemble your Macbook Air and a guide to copy your data.
- Renewed: According to Amazon: “Product works and looks like new. Comes with a 90-day warranty. Renewed products are pre-owned products not Apple certified but have been inspected and tested by Amazon-qualified suppliers. Box and accessories may be generic. All products on Amazon Renewed come with a minimum 90-day supplier-backed warranty.”

17.3″ entertainment and desktop replacement laptop
About 17.3″ laptops:
I am amazed at how many 17.3″ laptops are equipped with one of the following three annoying downsides:
– A 1366 x 768 or 1600 x 900 resolution display: I mean, come on, we can easily find 300-400$ laptops with 1080p displays nowadays, why is it so difficult to find one on a 17.3″ laptop?
– Hard Drive only: A modern laptop should be highly responsive, thanks to a SSD.
– Anemic CPU performance: Many options with ancient AMD CPUs or low performance Intel Atom CPUs.
So many 17.3″ options are disqualified from the get-go due to the presence of one of these deal breakers.
