How do we choose the Best High-End Laptops for Gaming and Creative Pros?

By that, I mean the laptops that offer the best gaming and overall performance at a given price. Because if you’re about to buy a laptop, you want the one that offers the best performance possible for your budget, right?

If you have the time to do research… but who does?

You don’t have the time to read or the knowledge to understand detailed laptop reviews and specifications and just want the answers?
In other words, what you want to know is: “What’s the best laptop for my budget and needs?
So if you don’t have the time, don’t worry. We’re here to help you with this article.

The features that we evaluate in order to make our recommendations:

1. Price
2. Performance: CPU, RAM, Storage, Graphic Card and Wireless Adapter
3. Screen: Size, Resolution, Finish, Panel type, Brightness, Contrast, Viewing Angles and Color Accuracy
4. Portability: Dimensions, Weight, Real-life battery life during average web browsing?
5. Usability: Keyboard: Layout, Key size, Travel/Pressure, Key Shape and any additional Function keys. Touch pad quality and presence or lack of dedicated buttons, backlit keyboard, numpad, Operating System, which ports are offered, webcam resolution, sound quality, optical drive, noise levels.
6. Reliability: How solid is the chassis and the screen hinges? Are the temperatures under load reasonable? Is the keyboard spill-resistant? Overall manufacturer long-term reliability? Is it easy to service the laptop?
7. Warranty: Warranty length? What does the warranty cover?

We then recommend laptops that offer the best overall features, at various price points.

A reminder:

My recommendations in this article are based on the prices that I saw on September 11th 2018. Prices and availability change all the time. While I can’t keep up with ever changing prices, I do recommend to you what are in my professional experience the best laptops around a price point.

Geforce GTX 1070, 17.3″ display

17.3″: ASUS ROG Strix Scar Edition GL703GS-DS74

– Click here to see the price on Amazon
– $1899.00 at B&H (Worldwide shipping)

Equipped with a 8th generation Intel Core i7-8750H Six-Core CPU, 16GB of RAM and a Nvidia Geforce GTX 1070 8GB graphic card, this laptop will be capable of running pretty much all games at a 1920 x 1080 resolution with high or maxed out details. The screen is equipped with G-Sync technology, this prevents screen tearing and stutters while gaming, resulting in a smoother gameplay.

That much horsepower should be capable of handling the vast majority of workloads too. Still, read on if you want a smaller, lighter, more portable laptop with more battery life, or a more powerful CPU, a more powerful graphic card (or two in SLI!), more RAM and or faster storage.

This laptop has a M.2 PCIe NVMe 256GB SSD storage drive, which greatly improves the laptop’s responsiveness, booting speed, reliability and it is more shock resistant than hard drives. It is also equipped with a large 1TB hard drive for extra storage, to install all your games. It also means that you have two storage drive, allowing you to upgrade them if you want to.

Like the performance, but want a smaller 15.6″ screen, a more lightweight gaming laptop, or a better battery life? Check out the alternatives below.

Pros:

  1. Equipped with the Nvidia Geforce 1070 8GB GDDR5
  2. Intel Core i7 8750H 8th gen Coffee Lake Six Core + Hyper-Threading 2.2-4.1GHz CPU
  3. Screen is equipped with an IPS-type panel which means greater viewing angles, better contrast and more vibrant colors.
  4. ASUS AURA SYNC customizable RGB Gaming Keyboard
  5. N-key rollover
  6. 1.8mm key travel
  7. 16GB of DDR4 2666MHz RAM (1x16GB stick)
  8. RAM can be upgraded to 32GB by adding a 16GB DDR4 2666MHz stick

15.6″ display alternative

ASUS Gaming ROG GL702VM-DS74

– Click here to see the price on Amazon
– $1946.42 at B&H (Worldwide shipping)

Very similar to the recommendation above, but with a smaller 15.6″ screen, so it’s smaller and lighter. Performance is identical, with the same CPU, graphic card, RAM and storage as the larger 17.3″ model.

The display is just as good, with the same 3ms respond time, 144Hz refresh rate and G-Sync as well.

You even get thinner screen bezels.

Slight improvements compared to the 17.3″ model: You get the updated HDMI 2.0 port instead of HDMI 1.4 and Bluetooth 5.0 instead of Bluetooth 4.1.

17.3″ thin and light gaming laptop that weights the same as the average 15.6″ gaming laptop

You want a large 17.3″ display without the heaviness of the usual 17.3″ gaming laptop?

The MSI GS73 is an excellent option. Being .8″ thin and weighting in at 5.35lbs, it’s amazingly light and thin for a gaming laptop with a 17.3″ display.

There’s an higher-end model with a display offering a 4K resolution. I don’t recommend it: Gaming performance will be much better at 1080p and you lose the fast 120Hz refresh rate that matters much more to gaming than an higher resolution.

This model is amazing if you are looking for a powerful and yet highly portable gaming laptop.

Weighting in at only 4.1lbs, this is the lightest gaming laptop with a Nvidia Geforce GTX 1070 Max-Q graphic card.

Its battery life is pretty good for a gaming laptop, with about 6 hours of web browsing and up to 8-9 hours for lightweight text editing and the like.

It is equipped with a powerful Intel Core i7-8750H CPU, 16GB of RAM and a Nvidia Geforce GTX 1070 8GB graphic card and will be capable of running pretty much all games at a 1920 x 1080 resolution with high or maxed out details.

This laptop has a 256GB M.2 SSD which greatly improves the laptop’s responsiveness, booting speed, reliability and it is more shock resistant than hard drives.

On the downside, it only comes with 256GB of storage capacity, clearly not enough for a gaming PC.

It does come with a second M.2 slot with support for both SATA and PCIe NVMe SSDs, but it’s difficult to access, requiring you to disassemble the laptop to access it.

  1. Equipped with the Nvidia Geforce 1070 8GB GDDR5
  2. Intel Core i7 8750HQ 8th gen Coffee Lake Six Core + Hyper-Threading 2.2-4.1GHz CPU
  3. Screen is equipped with an IPS panel which means greater viewing angles, better contrast and more vibrant colors.
  4. Backlit keyboard
  5. Optimus technology to increase battery life
  6. 16GB of DDR4 2400MHz RAM (2x 8GB sticks)
  7. RAM can be upgraded to 32GB (2x 16GB DDR4 stick).
  8. 256GB PCIe NVMe SSD which improves responsiveness and booting speed.
  9. 2nd M.2 slot
  10. Full HD 1920 x 1080 resolution display
  11. HDMI and Mini Display port video outputs.
  12. Windows 10
  13. Ethernet RJ45 port
  14. HD webcam
  15. 802.11ac WiFI
  16. Blutooth 4.1
  17. Numpad
  18. SD card reader
  19. Total of 4 USB ports, including one USB 3.1 Type-C and three USB 3.0 Type A
  20. USB 3.1 Type-C port supports Thunderbolt 3.
  21. Lightweight for a powerful gaming laptop : 4.1lbs
  22. Battery life: Fairly good for a gaming laptop: Expect about 6 hours of web browsing

Cons:

  1. No optical drive
  2. No card reader
  3. Gaming performance on battery power drops by about 60%, typical of gaming laptops
  4. Storage on base model is limited to 256GB.
  5. Hard to access RAM and M.2 slots, making upgrades difficult if you’re not tech savvy.

Slightly heavier, but with a longer battery runtime and a numpad

Gigabyte 15.6″ Aero 15X v8-BK4

– Click here to see the price on Amazon
– $2199.00 at B&H (Worldwide Shipping)

The Gigabye Aero 15X main competition is the MSI GS65 Stealth above.

Compared to the MSI, the Gigabyte is half a pound heavier, but it remains one of the lightest gaming laptop with a Geforce GTX 1070 Max-Q, tipping the scale at 4.62lbs.

What do you gain compared to the MSI GS65 Stealth?

1. A longer battery run time, of 8.5 hours for average web browsing and up to 12 hours for very light usage (think text editing, no WiFi).
2. A more solid chassis, with less flex.
3. A numpad
4. A SD card reader that’s extremely fast
5. Easier upgrades: The MSI GS65 comes with 2x8GB RAM sticks and a single M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD. You can add a second SSD and change the RAM, but that requires you to dissassemble almost the whole laptop, as the RAM slots and M.2 slot are on the other side of the motherboard. With the Gigabyte Aero 15X, you only need to remove the bottom cover to access the RAM (1x16GB, so you can simply add a second 16GB RAM stick to get to 32GB of RAM and adding a second SSD is a lot easier.
6. Slightly better performance: The Gigabyte has a better cooling system, although it’s louder at load too, but this results in higher performance, with the CPU capable of sustaining higher Turbo frequencies in the Gigabyte compared to the MSI.

As far as I’m concerned, unless having the lightest gaming laptop is what matters the most to you, the Gigabyte Aero 15X would be my pick over the MSI. There are too many pros for the Gigabyte (longer battery life, numpad, more solid chassis, SD card reader, easier to upgrade and slightly better performance) for me to ignore. Of course, both remain excellent choices and still, the MSI is half a pound lighter.

Entry level Geforce GTX 1080

MSI GT63 Titan

– Click here to see the price on Amazon

– $2599.00 at B&H (Worldwide Shipping)

This is basically our recommended base model , if you want the powerful combo of Intel’s six core CPU with Nvidia GTX 1080 graphic card.

While there are models equipped with the GTX 1080 that are less expensive, I don’t recommend them because they are equipped with the older, lower performance quad-core Intel Core i7-7700HQ CPU. You want the latest 8th generation Intel six-core CPU for maximum gaming performance.

It’s equipped with one 16GB stick of RAM and there are three empty slots, so you can upgrade all the way to 64GB of RAM!

Pros:

  1. Equipped with the Nvidia Geforce 1080 8GB GDDR5
  2. Intel Core i7 8750HQ 8th gen Coffee Lake Six-Core + Hyper-Threading 2.2-4.1GHz CPU
  3. 16GB of RAM: One stick of 16GB of DDR4 RAM.
  4. RAM can be upgraded to 64GB (4x16GB DDR4).
  5. Screen is equipped with an IPS Panel which means greater viewing angles, better contrast and more accurate colors.
  6. 1920 x 1080 1080p Full HD display
  7. Matte display doesn’t reflect light
  8. Supports Nvidia’s G-Sync which prevents screen tearing, minimizes stutter and input lag for an improved and smoother gameplay.
  9. 120Hz refresh rate
  10. 3ms response time (GtG)
  11. 256GB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD for an improved responsiveness and booting speed.
  12. 1 TB hard drive so you have plenty of space for your games and all your content.
  13. Hard drive is a 7200rpm model, so it’s not as slow as 5400rpm hard drives.
  14. Numpad
  15. 1080p Full HD webcam
  16. Dedicated left and right touchpad buttons.
  17. Decent keyboard for typing
  18. RJ45 Ethernet port.
  19. Bluetooth 5.0
  20. 802.11ac WiFi
  21. HDMI and Mini DisplayPort outputs.

  24. Backlit Keyboard
  25. SD card reader

Alienware 17 R5

– $3149.00 at B&H (Worldwide Shipping)

With an unlocked CPU and an overclocked Geforce GTX 1080, the Alienware 17 R5 takes gaming performance to another level.

The 2560 x 1440 display is a nice touch for creative pro. The Nvidia Geforce GTX 1080 should have no problem running games at that resolution, unlike 4K, which would be detrimental to gaming performance.

  2. The CPU is unlocked, meaning that it can be overclocked.

  4. 256GB PCIe SSD speeds up boot times, games launch faster and makes the system much more responsive.

64GB RAM + 3x512GB SSD + 2TB SSHD

While the ASUS ROG G703GI is equipped with the same CPU and graphic card as the Alienware 17 R5 and may appear to offer similar gaming performance, that is not the case actually. Due to having a lower resolution display (1920 x 1080 instead of 2560 x 1440), the graphic card won’t have to work as hard and thus frame rates will be higher.

You should also consider storage performance if you are a creative pro: With two or three SSD in RAID 0, depending on the configuration you pick, the storage performance of the ASUS ROG G703GI is exceptionally high, outperforming any laptop in this article and the vast majority of laptops on the market.

You also get Windows 10 Signature Edition, meaning that you don’t get any annoying bloatware.

Pros:

  1. Equipped with a powerful Intel Core i9-8950HK Six Core + Hyper-threading 2.9-4.8GHz CPU.
  2. The CPU is unlocked, meaning that it can be overclocked.
  3. Equipped with a factory overclocked Nvidia Geforce GTX 1080 8GB GDDR5 for higher performance!
  4. Very high-end storage performance: Two or three 512GB PCIe SSDs in RAID 0
  5. Windows 10 Signature Edition: No bloatware
  6. 2TB SSHD for plenty of storage.
  7.  32GB of DDR4 RAM that can be upgraded up to 64GB.
  8. 17.3″ Screen is equipped with an IPS Panel which means greater viewing angles, better contrast and more accurate colors.
  9. 1080p 1920 x 1080 display resolution.
  10. Response time of 3ms and a refresh rate of 144Hz.
  11. Supports Nvidia’s G-Sync which prevents screen tearing, minimizes stutter and input lag for an improved and smoother gameplay.
  12. 1 HDMI, 1 Thunderbolt and 1 Mini display port to connect your display on a external source.
  13. Xbox module allows you to easily connect Xbox controller
  14. 4 USB 3.0 ports.

  19. ROG Aura RGB Keyboard (Individual Key)
  20. Very fast SD card reader
  21. Numpad
  22. Anti-dust cooling fans
  23. RJ45 Ethernet port
  24. 802.11ac WiFI
  25. Bluetooth

Cons:

  1. Keyboard layout could be better : For example, the arrow keys overlap with the numpad.
  2. No optical drive

If you are looking to get the maximum gaming performance you can get out of a laptop, this is what I recommend.

It has not one but two Nvidia GeForce 1080 in SLI with which you can comfortably play any video game at a 4K resolution with high or maxed out details and a great FPS rate.

It’s equipped with a fast CPU too, the Intel Core i7-8850H 2.6-4.3GHz Six Core + Hyper-Threading.

It comes with 32GB of RAM and can easily be upgraded to 64GB of RAM by adding two 16GB sticks, seeing as there are a total of 4 RAM slots, with two that are free.

Storage wise, you get two high performance 256GB PCIe SSD, along with a 2.5″ 1TB 7200rpm hard drive.

One feature I love? A mechanical keyboard with MX Cherry Silver keys.

On the downside, this model is thick and heavy weighting a whooping 12.13lbs and it also has 2 power bricks which doesn’t help as far as portability and weight go.

Pros:

  1. Intel Core i7 8850H 8th gen Six-Core + Hyper-Threading 2.6-4.3GHz CPU
  2. Equipped with 2 Nvidia Geforce GTX 1080 8GB GDDR5 in SLI
  3. 2x256GB PCIe SSD speeds up boot times, games launch faster and makes the system much more responsive.
  4. Windows 10
  5. 1TB 7200rpm HDD for more storage.
  6.  32GB (2x16GB) of DDR4 RAM
  7. Four RAM slots (2 are empty) allows you to easily upgrade to 64GB of RAM.
  8. Large 18.4″ display, matte finish, equipped with an IPS Panel which means greater viewing angles, better contrast and more accurate colors.
  9. 1 Thunderbolt 3 / USB 3.1 Gen 2 combo Port (Type-C)
  10. HDMI and Mini Displayport
  11. 5 USB 3.0 ports.
  12. Dedicated left and right click buttons
  13. Great keyboard for typing
  14. Great keyboard layout
  15. SD card reader
  16. RJ45 Ethernet port
  17. 802.11ac WiFi
  18. Bluetooth 5.0
  19. Bluray burner

Cons:

  1. Not that portable: 1.86″ thick, 12.13 lbs and that’s before taking into account the two power bricks!
  2. Battery life is pretty much a joke, but that’s expected considering the hardware.
  3. Numpad is touch based.
  4. Gaming performance depends on the release of SLI profiles, otherwise performance to the level of a single graphic card.
