The Best Entry-level Tablets

Amazon Fire Tablets

1. Amazon Fire

The Amazon Fire is the least expensive tablet that I recommend. This is the newest 6th generation model of the Amazon Fire.

Compared to the previous model that I used to recommend, you get an improved battery life : 8 hours of mixed usage , as opposed to 7 hours.

It is also a bit thinner, by 1mm and lighter at 295 grams.

Pros:
– A MicroSD slot allows you to add a MicroSD card for up to 256GB additional storage to store music, pictures, videos and other content
– A choice of 8GB or 16GB of onboard storage.
– Inexpensive tablet and offers a good quality for its price
– A selection of 4 colors to choose from : Black, red, blue and yellow
– Quite lightweight at only 295g.
– Good for casual use such as browsing the internet, emails and Facebook
– Amazon prime members get free games, movies and apps

Cons:
– Low resolution (1024 x 600) screen so the display could be better and is not going to look as sharp as an HD, Full HD or higher resolution display
– Low camera quality: The back camera is only 2MP, while the front camera is even worse: 640 x 480. Acceptable at best for video calls, but you’re not going to be able to take mind-blowing pictures.
– Because of its low amount of memory, performance can be slow while running multiple applications at the same time.
– This is not a good tablet for game applications, games are demanding on this tablet and are most likely to be unable to run smoothly and properly.
– Restrictive OS: The operating system of amazon tablets is highly focused on Amazon services, this means that unless you are an Amazon prime member you can’t fully benefit from all that it has to offer.

2. Amazon Fire HD8

With the Fire HD8, you get a larger and sharper 8″ HD screen, a longer battery life, more RAM for running multiple apps, twice the storage capacity for the base model and a Micro SD slot if you want to increase the storage capacity.

It is also a bit heavier than the previous model: 369 grams, compared to 341 grams for the previous 2016 release.

Pros:
– HD Display for a sharp and crisp image quality so that way the display looks smoother.
– The base storage option is 16GB, double of what the HD6 and Fire Tablet offer as a base option.
– Good battery life: Up to 12 hours on regular use so it needs to be charged less often and can be enjoyed for longer periods of time
– 1.5GB RAM means that you can use more applications at the same time without slowdowns.
– A MicroSD slot allows you to insert a MicroSD memory card, of a capacity up to 256GB, for additional storage space for your music, video, pictures and other content.
– A choice of four different colors : Black, red, yellow and blue.

Cons:
– HD display: It’s better than the Amazon Fire, but you can get tablets with even higher resolution (Full HD or higher) displays that look sharper.
– Low camera quality: The back camera is only 2MP, while the front camera is even worse: 640 x 480. Acceptable at best for video calls, but you’re not going to be able to take mind-blowing pictures.
– Restrictive OS : The operating system of Amazon Tablets is highly focused on Amazon services, this means that unless you are an Amazon prime member you can’t fully benefit from all that it has to offer.

3. Amazon Fire Kids HD 8

The Amazon Fire kids gets a nice upgrade over its previous generation model.

The battery life, that used to offer only 6 hours of mixed usage, has now been doubled to 12 hours of battery life, which is a great improvement over the previous model, the Amazon Fire Kids HD 7.

The previous model used to have a 8GB and a 16GB of storage option. This model has 32GB of onboard storage!

The display screen gets a upgrade as well, you get a 8″ display insead of 7″.  You also get an HD 1280 x 800 resolution, which is an improvement over the past model.

This also means that this model is slightly heavier than the previous one. Although it doesn’t make that big of a difference when it comes to carrying it around.

Pros:
– The 2 Year unlimited warranty is a great, whatever happens to the tablet or no matter how it breaks, Amazon will replace it no questions asked!
– Comes with a child-proof protective case for extra protection.
– You get a choice of three protective case colors: Blue, yellow or pink. This way you can get a case that fits your child’s tastes.
– Tons of content for kids such as videos, games, music so that your child will never be bored with it.
– A MicroSD slot allows you to insert a MicroSD memory card, of a capacity up to 256GB, for additional storage space for your music, video, pictures and other content.
– The battery life is around 12 hours of mixed usage (Web browsing, videos, music and applications).  This means you have a battery that can easily last the day before having to be charged.

Cons:
– No storage options, as opposed to the previous model
– HD display: It’s better than the Amazon Fire, but you can get tablets with even higher resolution displays that look sharper.

18. VAIO Z Canvas:
About the VAIO Z Canvas:

If you are looking for a very powerful tablet with a detachable keyboard, the VAIO Z Canvas is one of the best choices.

It is equipped with an highly powerful Intel i7-4770HQ Quad-Core CPU. Don’t be fooled: While it is an older CPU, this is an Intel quad-core CPU based on the high performance Core architecture, more powerful than anything you’ll find in a tablet.

Depending on one of the three configurations available, you can get either 256GB of storage with 8GB of RAM, a 512GB SSD with 16GB of RAM. The SSDs in this model are PCIe which makes them some of the fastest drives available.

Pros:
– Equipped with a powerful Intel i7-4770HQ Quad-Core + Hyper-Threading 2.2-3.4GHz CPU.
– 256GB or 512GB of storage, depending on your configuration, for a fast booting speed and better responsiveness.
– 2-in-1 detachable screen to switch to tablet mode for whatever suits your needs.
– 8GB or 16GB of DDR3 RAM.
– Detachable backlit keyboard included.
– Stylus is included
– 2 x USB 3.0 ports.
– Quad HD 2560 x 1704 resolution
– SD card reader.
– HDMI and Mini DisplayPort outputs to plug in your display on a external screen.
– RJ45 Ethernet port.
– Good aluminum body.
– IPS display panel for better contrasts, accurate colors and larger view angles.
– 802.11ac WiFi
– Bluetooth 4.1
– Amazing battery life for such a powerful tablet: up to 11 hours.

Cons:

– Keyboard doesn’t have a backlight.
– Keyboard layout could be better : Arrows keys are relatively small, could be bothersome.
– Thick and heavy for a tablet: 11.8 x 0.7 x 8.4″ and 2.6lbs

19. Microsoft Surface Book

About the Microsoft Surface Book :

If you are looking for a detachable screen laptop that has a good performance, stunning display, stylish design, quality build (magnesium chassis) and great battery life, look no further than the Surface Book.

It comes in a wide variety of different configurations, my base recommendation being the model that has an Intel Core i5-6600U CPU with 8 GB of RAM, a dedicated Nvidia GPU and a 256GB PCIe SSD which are some of the fastest storage devices up to date. This model also has some configurations available with an higher performance GeForce GTX 965M which can be useful if you are looking into running programs that demand a better GPU such as Photoshop and Autocad.

This model also has a solid and quality build as well as a battery life that lasts on average 11 hours with the WiFi while browsing the internet which is great. Although when the screen is detached from the keyboard it only lasts up to 3 hours. If you are looking for a detachable that has a better battery in tablet mode, I strongly suggest going for the Microsoft Surface Pro 4.

The detachable keyboard is included on purchase and it also comes with a Microsoft Surface pen.

Pros:

– Equipped with an Intel i5-6300U Dual-Core + Hyper-Threading 2.4-3GHz CPU or i7-6500U Dual-Core + Hyper-Threading 2.5-3.1GHz CPU, depending on your configuration.
– 256GB, 512GB or 1TB PCIe SSD  that greatly improves the laptops responsiveness and booting speed.
– Between 8GB or 16GB of RAM depending on the chosen configuration.
– Amazing 11 hours battery life while browsing the internet with WiFi.
– IPS display panel for better contrasts, accurate colors and larger view angles.
– QHD 3000 x 2000 resolution display
– 1 Mini display port output to connect your display on a external screen.
– 2 x USB 3.0 ports.
– SD card reader.
– 802.11ac WiFi
– Bluetooth 4.0
– Good build quality: Magnesium chassis: Lightweight and solid
